The instant Yuri was safely parked in Ashe’s driveway, he checked his reflection in the rearview mirror. His hair was artfully tousled. He was wearing the dark purple eyeshadow that always had Ashe staring at him (and more).
Yuri stepped out of his sleek red car. His black silk shirt was unbuttoned enough to show off his neck. He’d opted for the infamous pants that left nothing to the imagination. It was murder wearing such an outfit in the late summer heat. Yet he bore his burden cheerfully. He was a man on a mission, and that mission was to debauch his boyfriend one last time while his precious siblings were away at camp.
Ashe had gifted him a key ages ago, so Yuri let himself in, sauntering into the foyer. “So, I heard a delicious rumor that a little bird is all alone in his cage.” That was not the most creative pick-up line ever, but he’d been too swamped with work to really give it much thought. Well, both of them would be too busy with other things to care about soon… except Ashe still hadn’t appeared. Yuri wasn’t worried, however. Not when he could smell the aroma of chocolate wafting in from the kitchen. So, he headed in that direction. He smoldered as Ashe mixed something. “Hey there, lover.”
“Hey.” Ashe didn’t look up from his work. “Grab some eggs from the fridge.”
“… I come here, in the pants that I had to get repaired because you ripped them off that one time, and your reaction is to ask me to get eggs.”
Ashe gave him a look. “It is when it’s Sophia and Duran’s first day of school and I still haven’t finished the traditional cake we have for dessert.”
“You gotta be joking,” Yuri said as he opened the fridge. After a moment of rummaging, he found a carton of store brand eggs. “It’s only August; shouldn’t the kids still be canoeing or whatever?”
Ashe shook his head. “School starts earlier than when we were kids.” Despite his situation, he smiled gratefully when Yuri offered him the eggs. “I’m sorry, I thought I mentioned that to you.”
“Maybe you did and with everything going on at work, I forgot.”
Ashe cracked an egg open. “Yuri, you’re brilliant. If you ever forgot anything, I would take it as a sign that the world was ending.” He cracked another egg. “Regardless, I’m more worried about time refusing to bend to my will today. I picked up another shift at Dedue’s this morning so my bank account can recover from back-to-school shopping. I thought I would still have enough time, but this cake is taking longer than I had hoped.”
“Just don’t bake it until the kids are home?”
Ashe made a displeased sound. “Except then I need to sign forms and make sure they’re ready for tomorrow, and—ugh!” Thankfully, his mixing bowl was plastic, since Ashe set it on the counter with such a thud that it almost spilled. Ashe frowned, then took a breath. “But I have no one to blame but myself.”
Now Yuri frowned, automatically moving to help Ashe by mixing some ingredients. He could point out that Ashe was a human being, and human beings were allowed to make mistakes. He could offer to finish baking the cake, but Ashe was more prideful when it came to the domestic arts than anyone realized except himself and probably Dedue. He could also suggest just picking up a cake at the store. But Ashe, bless his little cornball soul, would counter with some speech about how as the kids’ guardian it was his duty to provide them with a happy life. Even Yuri couldn’t rhetoric his way around such (sweet) stubbornness. That said, he did have other resources at his disposal…
“Listen up, Ashe.” He kissed Ashe’s cheek. “You just keep baking.” He jingled his keys. “I’ll pick up the little angels.”
Ashe eyed him thoughtfully. “Are you sure? I don’t want to put you out.”
“Please, I love your sibs. Hey, I am still listed as a person who’s allowed to pick them up, right?” Otherwise his plan was dead before it began.
Ashe nodded. “I write you down every year.” He smiled again. “Thanks, Yuri. I’ll make sure that Sophia and Duran save you a slice.”

Yuri tapped his fingers on the steering wheel impatiently. “Just let the kids out already,” he grumbled. “I’m not getting my sexy times; the universe owes me that chocolate cake as an apology. Or, you know, getting home with the kids before dark.” Maybe he could buy Ashe and the kids a house within walking distance of the school now that the Shady Lady’s latest tech was selling. Of course, Ashe would give him the whole lecture about his less than ethical dealings and how Ashe needed to support his siblings with his own means. He supposed with Ashe’s past riddled with examples of having to do the worst things to keep them alive, such an independent streak was to be expected. It was one of the many reasons that Yuri loved him so much. Still, it was annoying that he couldn’t help his boyfriend. Then again, maybe it was time to work up the courage to propose to Ashe. Then they could all just buy a house and live it in together. But would Ashe say yes? What if he…
“MOVE!” An old lady screamed as she honked her horn. “I have grandkids to pick up!”
“Okay,” Yuri breathed to himself as he drove up to the school. Hunh, the line had moved quite a bit while he was angsting over his love life. Go figure. He spotted Sophia talking to some girls her age while Duran (who was currently going through an intense Pokémon phase) was focused on his Switch. After showing a teacher the ID sign, he waved them down from his car. “Kids, it’s time to go home.”
… Speaking of his car, it seemed to really impress the girls Sophia was speaking to. “Woah,” Yuri could hear one girl say breathlessly. “Who’s that?”
Sophia, who was stout-hearted like Ashe—but also wanted to be well-liked at school—preened a little. “Oh, that’s just my brother’s boyfriend.” The casualness of her tone contrasted with her previous preening. She took Duran by his arm. “C’mon, let’s go.” Duran allowed his sister to guide them to the car.
Sophia slid into the passenger seat. “Is Ashe okay?” She was realizing that while it was cool to have your brother’s boyfriend pick you up in a ruby red sports car, that might also mean that her brother was hurt or sick.
“Ashe is toiling away to make the perfect cake for you two to celebrate the dawning of a new school year. He’s so focused on it that he ordered a beautiful yet insignificant creature such as myself to bring you two home.”
“Awesome,” Duran said from the backseat, not looking up.
“Yes, it is,” Yuri agreed as he ruffled Sophia’s hair. “By the way, Duran, we need to go that trade later.” Duran nodded. “Now, buckle up, you two. And be quick about it. I think the grandma behind us is plotting my murder.”

Both kids came home with backpacks full of forms to read and sign, so Yuri made dinner while Ashe languished in bureaucratic hell. It was nothing special—just grilled chicken with salad as a side. Yet all three of them sang his praises throughout the entire meal. Of course, once it was dessert time everyone (Yuri included) was all about Ashe. Ashe laughed and blushed, which just made him even cuter.
When the kids were tucked in bed and the dishwasher was running, Ashe sat next to Yuri on the couch. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“It was clear that you came here for, ah, certain activities. Then I made you play chauffeur.”
“I offered to do that,” Yuri reminded him. “Besides, today was fun.”
Ashe eyed him thoughtfully. “Speaking of fun…” His hand, gentle despite years of cooking and knife-wielding, caressed Yuri’s thigh. “We’ll have to be quiet since the kids need their rest.” He now squeezed Yuri’s thigh with a hint of possessiveness that no one would have ever associated with Ashe, unless they’d been as blessed as Yuri to encounter him in the bedroom. “However, I think we have time for a quickie or two.” Yuri didn’t resist as Ashe nuzzled his neck, deft hands already undoing his shirt. “Do you have any idea what it’s been like, seeing you in those damned pants and not being able to do anything about it?” His breath was hot against Yuri’s skin. His voice, even huskier thanks to lust, made Yuri let out a sigh that was almost a moan.
“Nope,” Yuri still managed to say, smirking. “But I suspect I am about to find out.”
